New Sewer Plant Update

MMA’s new regional wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) will be built on a 54-acre site at the Keystone Trade Center (KTC), which formerly was the United States Steel (USS) Fairless Works.  In the coming weeks there will be more information provided on this site, showing an updated architectural concept, as well as information about location and capacity; new treatment technology; and, a construction timeline.

Currently, to comply with the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act No. 537, Falls Township and Morrisville Borough are preparing to submit to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) a “Sewage Facilities 537 Plan Update Revision” for decommissioning the existing Morrisville and Keystone Trade Center (the old USS) plants, and for construction of the new regional facility at the KTC site.

The project includes construction of new transfer pump stations, and force mains to redirect flow as well as to consolidate treatment of wastewater – sewage — at the new facility.  Located at the southern end of the former USS Fairless, Falls Township, property, the new WWTF will discharge into the tidal Delaware River, just as the current facilities now do.

However, the new WWTF will offer improved effluent quality, designed to meet the more stringent regulations being imposed on the Delaware River, and will be built with attention to possible future standards for nutrient removal and dissolved oxygen inclusion in the effluent.

The project will be funded by grants and loans, and the expense will be spread across the customer base over many years, with the goal of minimizing the impact of increasing sewer rates.
